Crowded trail full of unprepared, unseasoned hikers. In my opinion it is a relatively easy hike, If it isn’t hot out, for the seasoned hiker. BUT this is not for you and you will struggle immensely if you are not someone who regularly hikes in the alpine terrain. A good test of fitness for this would be to put a treadmill to max incline and walk/jog like that for 4 miles. And then sing how many ring/ladder agility footwork rounds you can complete without disrupting rings/ladder. I can’t tell you how many people we saw on the trail that shouldn’t have been there! Blame instagram for all of that. Just terrible. Please look at photos of the actual trail to decide if this is a good idea for you. Don’t just pay attention to the beautiful alpine lake. As a seasoned hiker, it took us 2 hours to get up and almost 2 to get down. This was taking our time though because my husband is afraid of heights and not entirely comfortable with rock scrambling. He still hikes regularly though, just avoids technical terrain.

Definitely worth the hike, it was an amazing view! We started at the Lupine Meadows trailhead parking area and made our way towards Delta Lake. We went today Oct 16, 2024 and had amazing weather, sunny & 56 for most the trail with a high of 68. Not too hot nor too cold! This was our hike times : 11am-1:40pm Delta lake trail hike (also part of lupine meadow trailhead) -4.26 miles there 2hr 41 min Started return at 2:38pm -4.21 miles back 2hr 2416 ft elevation change. Keep in mind the last .8 miles goes to an unmaintained trail and is a very high grade. Lots of boulders, and not super clearly marked. Just follow the general foot traffic and you should head to the right spot. There was one area that was confusing towards the area as it leaves the regular trail to the unmaintained trail that is hidden down the hill you need to climb down. When you think the trail continues left you go down the hill to the right! I added a video to show this. Then VERY steep uphill. Trail was peaceful, only passed a dozen-ish people on a Wednesday.

It was an exceedingly difficult hike. Short in miles but high in elevation, and in some parts it feels as if you’re walking almost perpendicular. It was July 2023, and very crowded. People walking down and up the entire time. Very rarely were we alone on the trail. All ages were on the trail, no matter the difficulty. At times, I had to hold onto trees to pull myself up due to how steep it was. Highly recommend hiking boots and poles. In late may, it’s still snow covered: boots and crampons are necessary. There are both grizzly & black bears, so be bear aware and have bear spray.

Hard hike and breathtaking destination. The view is amazing and the lake ice cold in August.

An amazing hike, the views from the top are stunning! Make sure you have an offline copy of the trail because there is no signal the last part might of the hike might be confusing. Note that the water are extremely cold, it definitely wasn't the smart decision to try and swim. Last but not least, make sure to go down slowly, the way is really steep and when we did this hike a couple of people had to be rescued by a helicopter because they twisted their ankle.
