I didn’t care for the $5 fee at first, but didn’t mind it one bit by the end of my hike. A most attractive side of Kansas I had never seen before. Nicely kept and well marked trail, easy to follow but stimulating and enjoyable. Fine forest, tons of novel rock formations. Lots of great places to spring an ambush on the unsuspecting, not that I saw anyone else on the trail. Nor did I see any ticks, praise be. The lookout point was a letdown for me, found far superior views all along the way. Also found a dead doe being recycled by vultures and flies. Good times. Independence KS ain’t far from here, a quaint downtown to catch a bite before or after hike, namely Anne Mae’s joint. They have campgrounds here as well, fishing and boating if that’s your thing; I imagine be a pretty great place to get away for a couple days. It certainly made a grand couple hours for me, highly recommended way to break up your long drive to wheresoever.

Elk City State Park is my favorite place to camp in Kansas. It has wonderful hiking trails, nice restrooms, and lots of trees. It is also close to the city of Independence, Kansas so you can run into town quickly if you need to. There are boat ramps to access the lake.

Yeah this is the #1 hiking spot in the entire state of Kansas. And I consider myself an expert as Ive done numerous 14ers in Colorado. Make sure you do the upper trail above the roadway or start at the overlook and hike down whichever you prefer. The rocky areas are beautiful with some legitimate elevation inclines here and there. Well maintained trails, but as always make sure to protect yourself from ticks in summer and fall when its hot. As far as the lake itself goes not a clue.
